Well-known Chainsaw Sisters Saloon near BWCA to be demolished

DULUTH, Minn. The end has come for a well-known saloon on the fringe of the Boundary Waters.

The Chainsaw Sisters Saloon has been sold to the Trust for Public Land conservation group and will be torn down.

The saloon owned by sisters Michele Richards and Marlene Zorman has been the last bit of civilization for canoeists and anglers heading into the BWCA toward Mudro Lake and beyond. The sisters built the saloon and parking lot in 1988, and said it was time for a change.

The property will eventually be transferred to the U.S. Forest Service for free public use and the access point will remain.

Richards said she and her sister picked up the "Chainsaw Sisters'' nickname because they did a lot of thinning of trees while working for the Forest Service.
