WITNESS: Ice houses as art

Last update: June 5, 2006 - 4:06 PM

Huddling like penguins seeking shelter from the wind, Rachel Mykkanen and Daniel Campbell of Minneapolis balanced atop a plastic milk crate and peered through a 3/8-inch hole in the side of an icehouse. The visual journey took them down a tunnel of plastic flowers; at the end was a reflection of their own eyes, snapping them back to the reality of where they were: standing on 10 inches of ice on Medicine Lake in Plymouth, viewing the Art Shanty Projects . The uniquely Minnesotan show was curated by Peter Haakon Thompson and David Pitman and includes more than 30 exhibits of icehouse architecture and performance art through Feb. 19.
