The Prez Fight

The presidential campaign is exciting again. YouTube debates, hanging chads, cliffhanger election nights. No wonder voter turnout is soaring to levels not seen since that wild 1968 election. And in September 2008 the fun comes to the Twin Cities, with the GOP convention in St. Paul.

The Big Question

This is a place where open-minded critical thinkers of all political persuasions encounter information and arguments that both support and challenge their preconceptions. The goal is not to eliminate differences but to narrow and clarify them. We begin with a bedrock agreement that the search for insight and clarity is important, serious - and fun.

We ask commenters to be civil and substantive and, if possible, good humored. We reserve the right to delete comments that disregard this request.

Roadguy is Jim Foti, a transportation geek who is fascinated with the ways that Minnesotans get around town. Join him for smart remarks, navigational nuggets and adventures in the Twin Cities and beyond.

Think Again

Katherine joined the Star Tribune as a metro columnist in March of 2005. In her column, she covers a broad range of topics reflecting her experiences and interests.

In this blog, she will address many of the same issues, albeit in quicker, less formal fashion, along with pointing readers to other sources of interesting online commentary and coverage.

Yesterday's news

Sample Minnesota's rich history, courtesy of a microfilm archive of newspaper articles, photos and ads dating back more than 130 years. Fresh items are posted two or three times a week.

From the Editors

The Star Tribune newspaper you read each morning, and the site you are reading right now, are the product of hundreds of decisions made every day by editors, reporters, designers and others here in the Twin Cities. In this blog, senior editors will write about how and why those decisions are made and provide a glimpse of where the Star Tribune is headed.

Russo's Rants

Michael Russo has covered the NHL since 1995 and has more to say about it than generally fits into the newspaper. So he's been handed a platform to share timely information, offer thoughts on the league and feed a wide-ranging hockey-centric discussion with readers. Jump over the boards or drop the gloves, if you dare.

On the Wolves

Having missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, sports reporter Jerry Zgoda is back on the Timberwolves beat after reporting on everything from University of Minnesota athletics to all things outdoors.

Rand Ball

Sports writer Michael Rand started RandBall in December 2006 hoping to change the world and save the puppies. So far, he's only managed to use the word [redacted] a lot.

He welcomes your suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius and tasteless haikus at mrand@startribune.com, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Twins Insider

La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs, attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago, and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star (post-strike era). He also can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, educating the hosts about all things baseball.

Around the majors

Joe Christensen, the Star Tribune's national baseball reporter, has covered the big leagues since 1998. A Faribault native, he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1996. Before working for the Star Tribune, he spent three years covering the Orioles for the Baltimore Sun. He also covered the Padres and Dodgers for newspapers in Southern California. He'll share his thoughts here on the Twins and all things baseball.

A fan's view from Section 220

In another millennium, Howard Sinker covered the Twins for the Star Tribune. Today, he is a commentator on baseball and other sports for Minnesota Public Radio's Midday program. He grew up rooting for the Cubs, back before it was trendy, has settled quite nicely into a season-ticket package in Section 220 of the Metrodome and owns two XM Radios. He'll provide an expert fan's perspective on what's happening on and off the field, as well as links to interesting and unusual baseball stuff on the web.

Ward on Wine

Thirty years ago at a trattoria on the isle of Capri, Bill Ward had a lusty homemade red that rocked his world. Ever since this "so that's what wine's all about" moment, he has been seeking similar experiences, always aiming to approach wine with an innocent eye (and nose, and palate). Along the way, he's learned that wine need not be profound to be meaningful and memorable, that it is a simple pleasure, and at its best when shared with friends and other loved ones.
